Open USD vs USDT

Exchanging USDT directly with Tether for dollars requires a verified account and at least US$100,000. OUSD uses provider onboarding. Tether’s minimum applies to dealing with the issuer, not every exchange trade or wallet transfer. For a payment integration, compare your actual access route first.

Question Open USD (OUSD) Tether USD₮ (USDT)
Issuer Bridge Building Inc. Tether International, S.A. de C.V., domiciled in El Salvador.
Native networks Base, Ethereum, Solana and Tempo. Contracts Multiple networks, including Ethereum, Tron and Solana. Use Tether’s USDT-specific identifiers.
Create tokens or redeem for dollars Provider onboarding and eligibility checks. Approved account, identity checks and jurisdiction eligibility; minimum US$100,000.
Issuer transaction fees No Bridge mint/redemption fee; other service charges may apply. Acquisition: 0.1%. Redemption: greater of US$1,000 or 0.1%. Fee schedule

Tether also charges a nonrefundable verification fee of US$150 in Tether tokens, which can count toward a redemption. An exchange or payment provider sets its own fees, limits and settlement terms. Tether’s eligibility restrictions include most US persons, with limited approved exceptions; OUSD access also depends on the provider and geography.

Open Standard names BlackRock, Lead Bank and BNY as OUSD reserve holders and links to monthly attestations. This comparison has not reviewed an individual OUSD attestation.

Tether’s terms describe USDT reserves as cash, cash equivalents and other assets, potentially including affiliate loan receivables. Dollar-denominated does not mean cash-only backing. Compare the current reserve disclosures and redemption rights rather than treating either token as a bank deposit; no reserves were independently audited here.

OUSD’s supply/activity rewards require Open Standard partner registration. A USDT lending or exchange yield offer is a separate service, not part of the issuer’s 1:1 redemption mechanism. Tether’s yield explainer describes lending and liquidity provision, which add their own risks. Do not assume that holding either token makes a customer eligible for a reward program.

  • Confirm the exact token address and network at both ends. A common ticker or dollar target does not make tokens interchangeable in an API.
  • For USDT, avoid using legacy network entries as evidence of current issuer support. Tether has ended direct issuance/redemption on Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS and Algorand.
  • For an Ethereum smart contract, Tether notes that USDT’s transfer function does not return a Boolean and recommends a compatible safe-transfer wrapper. See its integration guidelines.
  • For OUSD, choose a provider by task, then confirm that account’s supported operation and network.

This compares Open Standard’s OUSD with USDT. Origin Dollar (also OUSD) and Tether’s USAT are different assets. No payment flow was independently tested for this page.
